YouTube Wheel Master

Scroll the wheel โ€” skip forward and back on YouTube

No keyboard shortcuts, no dragging the progress bar. Hover over the YouTube player and scroll your mouse wheel to jump 5 seconds forward or backward โ€” with a clean center OSD showing exactly where you are.

A zero-UI Chrome extension for youtube.com/watch: wheel-based seek, 5-second steps, and a 0.5s fade-out time indicator in the center of the video.

Overview

Core features (MVP)

F1 โ€” Wheel seek on the player

Scroll up to move forward, scroll down to move back โ€” 5 seconds per notch, only while the cursor is over the video player.

  • YouTube Player API (seekTo) + HTML5 Video API (currentTime) for progress bar sync
  • currentTime clamped between 0 and video duration
  • e.preventDefault() with passive: false to stop page scroll while seeking

F2 โ€” Center OSD feedback

Each wheel action shows a semi-transparent popup at the center of the screen โ€” e.g. 1:23 / 10:45 โ€” visible for 0.5 seconds then fading out.

Zero-UI design

No popup, no options page. Install from the store and it works immediately in the background on YouTube watch pages.

SPA navigation

  • MutationObserver + yt-navigate-finish to re-attach listeners on new videos
  • WeakSet prevents duplicate wheel listeners on the same player

Technical stack

  • Chrome Extension Manifest V3
  • host_permissions for youtube.com
  • Chrome i18n: _locales/en, ko, ja (name & description follow browser UI language)
  • content/content.js + content/content.css โ€” no backend, no external libraries

MVP scope & roadmap

  • In scope: youtube.com/watch playback pages
  • Out of scope (MVP): YouTube Shorts (/shorts/) โ€” different DOM, needs separate selectors
  • Future: user-configurable seek interval, Shorts support
Flow

User flow

Install once โ€” then only the wheel:

  • Install from Chrome Web Store โ€” extension starts in the background
  • Open any YouTube watch page and start playback
  • Hover the player and scroll the wheel up (forward) or down (back)
  • Center OSD shows current time / total duration, then fades away
Users

Who it's for

  • Anyone who scrubs through YouTube often
  • Users who prefer mouse over keyboard shortcuts
  • Viewers who want instant, visual feedback while seeking
Privacy

Privacy

  • Runs only on youtube.com โ€” no data sent to developer servers
  • Does not read watch history, accounts, or comments
  • No analytics or tracking in the MVP

YouTube Wheel Master exists for one job: make seeking feel as natural as scrolling. Install and scroll โ€” that's it.
